Not so lonely...

Again this morning I caught a faint whiff of pipe tobacco in the upstairs hallway. My husband doesn't smoke. I've known the man for fifteen years--one would think I'd have noticed.

Every now and then, in the quiet hours of darkness, we hear the faint tinkling of a child's toy. Our own children being fast asleep and all toys put away for the night. There have been soft footsteps on the stairs--taken for the cat, only to discover the cat already curled up, asleep on the bed.

The skittering and scratching sounds can be attributed to small critters finding their way in the lathes and plaster of these old walls. As to the rest...it can be a tad disconcerting in the darkness but for now, everyone seems friendly. And it's nice to have the company.

I love living in an old house for this very reason. A house with old memories has a soul.

Dori, have you ever read the Green Knowe books by L.M. Boston? Something tells me you would like them. The child in that story lives in a very old English manor house where the echoes of the past sometimes breach into the present. Despite this, it doesn't really feel like a ghost story--more like traveling back and forth in time.

Sooz, I just added that to my book list. From you? I'll take a book recommendation!

HP, I love our old house. Despite a growing multitude of grievances. At least I now have an explanation for why the cat will rush over to the wall, then just sit and stare at it. You know, other than him being a complete psycho.

Monica, you have me intrigued.

And Erin...ta!

For the record, I love watching Ghost Hunters, but not for the "scary music" moments of impending doom. That's just media hogwash, but sometimes when Jason and Grant discover things, there's no explanation and I LOVE that they're so cool about it.

I'm a believer but have only had a few instances from the paranormal, and all of it was peaceful and comfortable, like they're meant to be here.

Great post!
