New tenet moving in, that is. And all were enthralled...
He even brought his own house. Very considerate of him, don't you think?
If you read the Husband's blog then you already know about our newest addition. For everyone else, Husband brought his new partner home today. Helix the Bomb Dog. Jacob is beside himself with glee and joy--and he can tell you exactly what it is that Helix does and why he does it and what his daddy is supposed to do with what Helix finds. Just ask him. He'd be more than happy to share--and with a great deal of non-departmentally approved improvisation!
Dakota T. Dog is taking it a little personally, hopefully he'll get over his jealous snit soon. And the cat is well...I don't know how the cat is taking it--he's napped through it all.
Earlier in December the police department experienced a large shift in personnel. Promotions left empty slots that needed filling. One of those slots was a full time EOD K-9 position. Although he worked with EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) in the Navy and has been one of the on-call tech guys with the department bomb squad, he certainly wasn't expecting the phone call that night informing him that the position was his.
K-9 is a Monday through Friday type day job. Did you get that? Day job. He kept asking me if I was okay with the move. Are you kidding me? Am I okay with that?! I am ecstatic! After six years of working the midnight shift, six years of him being gone at night, six years of living opposite schedules, we have a chance at some sort of normalcy? Yes. I'm okay with it. The bomb squad stuff? He knows what he's doing. He's well trained--his partner is very well trained. I trust his instincts and know he won't do anything stupid. That's all I can do. That, and enjoy having him home at nights. I can do that too.

How wonderful to have your hubby home at night. I was curious on how Dakota is with other animals. Our Akitas, just by instinct don't do well with other animals, PERIOD! They haven't been raised to be aggressive or anything; as I'm sure you already know, it's the breed. Is Dakota like that or does he tolerate other animals well?
He and the cat have always gotten along. Since the first day we brought Dakota home from his rescue foster home we have socialized him with everyone that walks through the door and with as many other dogs we could find. He and Amy's dogs used to play together a lot and did really well. So far he and Helix are doing okay. Dakota barks at him and Helix just doesn't care. I think it'll be a few days before we have everybody all together out in the backyard--dogs and kids. Helix is outside in a kennel and that eliminates indoor tension (that's MY spot, oh, and so is that one and that one)! I'd kick them BOTH outside within seconds!
So happy for you with the day job and all! That's just great!!
I'm not an animal lover, so I'll just have to assume that that's great too ;-)
Ya know we moved into basehousing in Chicago when we first go up there. The kids there were relentless with our dogs. They threw things at them, taunted them. We actually came home to police drawing down on Yukki because he had scaled our fence after being shot at with BB's from the neigbor kid. We couldn't prove anything but the BB's were all over our yard. Kiara couldn't jump the fence, but she tore up the siding trying to get into the house away from the shots. It was sad and our dogs have never been the same. Prior to that, we never had issues with people. Now, we just keep them away from everyone because Yukki is so tempermental with everyone but us. He couldn't be a more loving family dog, but I wouldn't trust him for a second around anyone else.
Dori: Congrats on having your hubby back on the M-F day shift! That whole opposite-schedule routine gets old FAST. (My dad was in law enforcement, so "been there, done that".) And now I understand why you're OK with the bomb squad job - Navy EOD explains it all. LOL That's pretty much best training a person can get, from what I understand.
Gina: We had a neighbor kid like that, too. He would sit on the roof of his house and shoot at watermelons in my garden across the street and in my backyard! I confronted his mother about it one day, and she was one of these "oh, my son would never do that!" Well, one day she came home to find the police there and wanting to have words with her about her son, who they'd plucked off the roof along with his BB gun - and I wasn't the one who called them! Apparently he'd pissed off other neighbors too.
I take it the brat's parents (your neighbors) were in denial about their "sweet little boy", too? I can't blame your dogs for not liking people after an experience like that! If it weren't for the fact that it would have gone badly in the end for your poor Yukki, I'd wish he'd taken a large revenge bite out the the little sh*t....
